About Jorn

A serial entrepreneur and philanthropist, Jorn Lyseggen is the Founder & CEO of Meltwater, which he started in his home country of Norway in 2001. Launched with just a $15,000 investment, Jorn and his team have grown the company from its humble beginnings with 2 guys and a coffee machine into a global leader in media intelligence, with over 1,500 employees in 55 offices across 6 continents, and more than 25,000 clients worldwide today.

Jorn started his career as a research scientist in Norway, focused on artificial intelligence – a theme that remains central to his professional life today. He’s an inventor at heart, holding two patents for technical innovations. Leveraging his passion for data science, Jorn started three companies that resulted in two trade sales and a public listing on the Swedish stock exchange, before Meltwater took off in 2001.

Jorn believes in technology's power to affect entire economies, and to change the way companies around the world are governed and run. His first book, Outside Insight: Navigating a World Drowning in Data, illustrates this idea by describing the emergence of a new software category that will focus on how insights gleaned from the vast amount of external information available on the web can and will transform corporate decision-making.

In 2016, Jorn launched SHACK15, the first data science hub, in London, as a place where tomorrow's leading global tech startups can come together to meet, collaborate and innovate – following his own love for this space.

An experienced entrepreneur, Jorn also believes in the importance of supporting the next generation of tech leaders, and that they can originate anywhere in the world. Based on the notion that talent is evenly distributed though opportunity is not, in 2008 Jorn founded the Meltwater Entrepreneurial School of Technology (MEST) - a Pan-African training program, seed fund and incubator headquartered in Accra, Ghana – to find, train and support talented African tech entrepreneurs.

Jorn has been featured in Forbes, CNN, BBC and TechCrunch, among others. He's spoken at top universities including Harvard, Stanford and Oxford, and is a member of the Europas Hall of Fame. Today he is based between San Francisco and London.

Navigating a world drowning in data

Jorn's book, Outside Insight: Navigating a world drowning in data, launches October 12th 2017. Based on the core concept behind Meltwater, Outside Insight discusses the importance of external data and the valuable insights that decision makers can glean by looking outside their own brand to leverage the 'online breadcrumbs' competitors leave behind. Filled with cases featuring major global brands, Jorn offers a detailed plan for managers across all company functions to implement Outside Insight into their decision-making processes.

Pan-African start-up incubator

MEST is a Pan-African training program, seed fund and incubator for African entrepreneurs. Jorn founded MEST in 2008 via the Meltwater Foundation because he believes there is a massive amount of untapped talent on the African continent that lacks access to training, resources and support. Today it's headquartered in Accra, Ghana, with over 30 portfolio companies, incubators in Accra, Lagos and Cape Town and a presence across the continent.

MEST is not just training people; it’s shaping the next generation of software entrepreneurs.
